Volunteer

Together, for the past twenty-four years, our volunteers have helped thousands of refugees, immigrants and members of the Vietnamese community foster ties to the greater Seattle community. In 2016, Helping Link had over 90 volunteers, 30% working professionals, 60% university/college students and 10% retirees. Together our marvelous group contributed over 4,780 hours of service in 2016.

We are always welcoming new volunteers in various positions including teaching, technology, public relations/communications and admin/general support.

While it can be helpful, it is not a requirement to speak Vietnamese.

Citizenship Instructor

Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối is looking for a Citizenship Instructor to teach English literacy, US history, and government to English limited speaking adult students.

Responsibilities:

  • Be available during class hours to successfully teach and inspire students
  • Work with a cohort of other instructors to develop and discuss lesson plans to ensure compatibility and compliance with present Citizenship test
  • Prepare for and instruct the Citizenship class to maximize student success on the real test
  • Oversee and organize all learning and testing materials and track student progress reports for the end of the quarter
  • Be engaging, inspiring, imaginative, passionate and friendly

Requirements:

  • Commit a minimum of 4 hours per week during class times for instruction
  • Strong passion in working with a diverse and limited English speaking group of students

Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối is seeking volunteers to serve as Adult ESL instructors for teaching instruction of basic English language fluency.

Responsibilities:

  • Be available during class hours to successfully teach and inspire students
  • Work with a cohort of other instructors to develop and discuss lesson plans to ensure materials follow state and community standards and are practical for students’ daily lives
  • Prepare for and instruct the ESL class to maximize student success and ensure student confidence in speaking English
  • Oversee and organize all learning and testing materials and track student progress reports for the end of the quarter
  • Be engaging, inspiring, imaginative, passionate and friendly

Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối is looking for tech-savvy individuals who are interested in sharing their skills with immigrants learning how to use iPads for the first time. This is a very popular program for adults & seniors that will help them connect with the younger generation.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach iPad skills to adults in small settings of 6 to 10 students
  • Teach a curriculum that includes basics such as: downloading/managing apps, sending/receiving email, using the Internet, and more
  • Engage students with interactive activities and be prepared to answer related questions to lesson plans

*Note: Technical support, resources, and materials will be provided to instructors

Requirements:

  • Commit a minimum of 4 hours per week during class times for instruction

Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối is looking for a graphic designer to create visual ideas for the purpose of informing and capturing the interest of prospective students, volunteers, and donors. This role involves designing artwork, sound, text, and video into interactive multimedia, packaging, and advertisements using graphic design software.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Executive Director to discuss project details and objectives
  • Assist in designing and creating key visuals for marketing tools for several different promotional purposes such as events, volunteer recruitment, student recruitment
  • Provide a critical and analytical skill to design and proof projects
  • Work with various other team members (including but not limited to, PR/Comms, Photographer, Executive Director, etc.)

Requirements:

  • Experience/background in graphic design with a portfolio of past works
  • Be familiar with various programs such as but not limited to: Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator
  • Have a passion for design, immigrant assistance and helping the local Vietnamese community

Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối is seeking a marketing specialist who can develop marketing materials that will cater to a diverse demographic within and around the Chinatown-International District (CID) community.

Responsibilities:

  • Brainstorm and develop ideas for creative marketing kits and campaigns
  • Conduct demographic research on community needs and program capability
  • Assist in internal and external marketing activities by demonstrating expertise in content development, advertising, and event planning

Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối is looking for an information technology (IT) systems admin to help with computer set-up, installation, troubleshooting, service, security, and maintenance upgrades.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and lead administrative projects and tasks for the IT Team (group of 2-6 volunteers)
  • Manage and maintain existing systems
  • Identify and recommend new hardware and software upgrades
  • Troubleshoot longstanding and advance technology issues
  • Optimize the system server capacity within the IT infrastructure

Requirements:

  • Bachelor (4-year) degree in Computer Science or similar
  • Microsoft MCSA or MCSE Certification in Windows Server, networking or other relevant certification
  • 4 or more years experience in system administration
  • 4 or more years experience in Microsoft Server 2008, 2012, and or 2016 administration
  • 4 or more years planning and deploying Microsoft servers
  • Strong networking experience

  • Assist the SalesForce analytics team with data entry when appropriate
  • Assist with outreach recruitment

Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối is looking for a volunteer recruitment and engagement specialist to actively recruit young professional and student volunteers, sponsors, clients and members of the board on a continuing basis. A volunteer recruitment and engagement specialist will also be actively involved in the C-ID community and increase awareness and visibility of Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối.

Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Executive Director you will:

  • Write, edit, update and manage recruitment ads
  • Develop and cultivate positive relationships with professional networks, nearby schools, universities, businesses, residents, churches and temples, community centers and other community members in the Little Saigon/Chinatown/International District neighborhoods
  • Seek out new opportunities for placement of recruitment ads within schools, professional networks and young professional community forums
  • Manage communication with prospective volunteers, donors, clients and members of the board
  • Help develop Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối’s vision and future strategy for board of members, sponsors, clients, and future volunteers
  • Lead volunteer onboarding sessions twice a month
  • Lead community outreach efforts that promote Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối such as posting flyers, event promotion tabling, and attending community meetings

Board of Director

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Attend all Board meetings and the annual Board Retreat, and participate actively in two annual Board fundraisers: Our spring Seattle Foundation Give Big and fall Annual Gala.
  • Serve on one Board Committee and/or Task Force/Working Group, and carry out related responsibilities.
  • Review agenda and supporting materials before Board and committee/task force/working group meetings.
  • Understand and commit to Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối’s mission, services, programs, and policies.
  • Make Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối a philanthropic priority, and make an annual gift that is personally significant that reflects that priority.
  • Participate actively in fund development initiatives, including hosting a table of 10 at the Annual Fall Gala, and bringing guests to our Give Big event.
  • Be a community ambassador for Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối and make warm introductions for Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối to friends, associates, and community leaders.
  • Recommend board and committee members.
  • Follow all conflict of interest, ethics and confidentiality guidelines.

What do I bring to Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối?

  • A passion for and commitment to Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối’s vision, mission, and goals for Vietnamese-Americans’ social adjustment, family stability, and self-sufficiency.
  • Demonstrated a track record of working in or directing teams and willingness to take on leadership roles.
  • Experience in at least one relevant area, such as non-profit governance, fund development, advocacy, strategic planning, IT, organizational development, change/growth management, program development and expansion, finance/accounting, and law.
  • Prior board experience is highly desirable.

Terms and Time Commitments

Members elected to a 2-year term (renewable for two additional 2-year terms). You should be prepared to invest about 5 – 8 hours per month, typically:

  • 2 hours to prepare for and attend a Board meeting (10 per year)
  • 3 hours for committee work (per committee)
  • 1 – 3 hours for particular tasks, meetings, introductions to community leaders, events and fund development activities, e.g. the annual Board Retreat and recruitment of Annual Gala guests.

Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Executive Director you will:

  • Develop and cultivate positive relationships with businesses, residents, churches and temples, community centers and other community members in the Little Saigon/Chinatown/International District neighborhoods

  • Develop and cultivate positive relationships with professional networks, nearby schools, universities, businesses, residents, churches and temples, community centers and other community members in the Little Saigon/Chinatown/International District neighborhoods
  • Seek out new opportunities for placement of recruitment ads within schools, professional networks and young professional community forums
  • Manage communication with prospective volunteers, donors, clients and members of the board
  • Help develop Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối’s vision and future strategy for board of members, sponsors, clients, and future volunteers
  • Lead volunteer onboarding sessions twice a month
  • Lead community outreach efforts that promote Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối such as posting flyers, event promotion tabling, and attending community meetings

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Attend all Board meetings and the annual Board Retreat, and participate actively in two annual Board fundraisers: Our spring Seattle Foundation Give Big and fall Annual Gala.
  • Serve on one Board Committee and/or Task Force/Working Group, and carry out related responsibilities.
  • Review agenda and supporting materials before Board and committee/task force/working group meetings.
  • Understand and commit to Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối’s mission, services, programs, and policies.
  • Make Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối a philanthropic priority, and make an annual gift that is personally significant that reflects that priority.
  • Participate actively in fund development initiatives, including hosting a table of 10 at the Annual Fall Gala, and bringing guests to our Give Big event.
  • Be a community ambassador for Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối and make warm introductions for Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối to friends, associates, and community leaders.
  • Recommend board and committee members.
  • Follow all conflict of interest, ethics and confidentiality guidelines.

What do I bring to Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối?

  • A passion for and commitment to Helping Link/Một Dấu Nối’s vision, mission, and goals for Vietnamese-Americans’ social adjustment, family stability, and self-sufficiency.
  • Demonstrated a track record of working in or directing teams and willingness to take on leadership roles.
  • Experience in at least one relevant area, such as non-profit governance, fund development, advocacy, strategic planning, IT, organizational development, change/growth management, program development and expansion, finance/accounting, and law.
  • Prior board experience is highly desirable.

Terms and Time Commitments

Members elected to a 2-year term (renewable for two additional 2-year terms). You should be prepared to invest about 5 – 8 hours per month, typically:

  • 2 hours to prepare for and attend a Board meeting (10 per year)
  • 3 hours for committee work (per committee)
  • 1 – 3 hours for particular tasks, meetings, introductions to community leaders, events and fund development activities, e.g. the annual Board Retreat and recruitment of Annual Gala guests.
